An IUCD is a small, flexible plastic frame with copper sleeves or wires around it and is placed inside the uterus. It works by causing a chemical change that damages sperm and egg before they can meet. The IUD is inserted into the uterus through the vagina in a simple procedure conducted by the doctor.

Once inserted, an IUCD prevents pregnancy up to 3 years depending on the type of device. An IUD can last for 3 years (depending on the model), the person has complete choice over how long they want it for. It can be removed if desired. You may experience changes in bleeding pattern in the first 3-6 months and may also experience cramping and pain during monthly bleeding.
